The country of Chad

Chad Project

The country of Chad is one of the poorest African nations and is known for its social and
political instability. Even within this setting the disenfranchised women of Guereda (Eastern
Chad) have suffered more than most. These women have been shunned by society and
administrators alike after they fought for their lives as part of the separatist movement. As a
result, before our project, we found them mostly illiterate, without access to agriculture
to feed themselves and skills to help them become economically self-sufficient.
Corridors of Peace and NGO dedicated to supporting peace, conceived of the project, having
a presence in Guereda and the ability to deliver ‘on the ground’ project work.
supported by Rotary foundation focused at economic and community development enabled
3 key parties to unite to deliver sustainable help to these beneficiaries. RC Basel
International & RC N’Djamena Toumai + Jesuit Refugee Service JRS came together to
develop and implement this grant with the kind support of the Swiss districts 1980, 1990
and 2000.
Having delivered the project over the past 2 years and through the difficulties of COVID we
are very proud to see that >100 women have been given basic literacy, the ability to sew,
farm and produce goods that they can now sell in order to support themselves and their
dependents. Furthermore, these women, together with the equipment that has been
purchased from the grant enable a ‘train the trainer’ model, which has allowed the project
to scale with new cohorts of women continuing to learn these skills.
Currently, the project has over 250 direct Beneficiaries
Delivering such a difficult project in one of the most needy parts of the world has given CoP a
great boost and a pride to the Rotarians involved and has attracted the interest of the Swiss
ambassador to Chad, with the potential to deliver further resources to deepen the work.
Your little contributions would impact a great deal, nothing is too small in this context
